Initially, colour management was performed on a device-by-device basis, requiring manual calibration for each output device. This process was cumbersome and could lead to inconsistencies in colour reproduction, particularly on monitors.
In modern colour management, the image data is processed through a Colour Management Module (CMM) which converts the device-dependent colour values to a device-independent colour space (Lab*) and then reinterprets them for the target device. This ensures that colours are reproduced correctly across different devices.
